about the artwork
Pictures at an Exhibition is a two-part program in which artists and the community at large will be given opportunity to explore and enjoy connections between visual art and music. The program centers on the St. Louis Symphony’s January 2013 performances of Modest Mussorgsky’s programmatic suite Pictures at an Exhibition. As Mussorgsky’s famous composition was inspired by an exhibition of contemporary visual art, Art Saint Louis will invite artists and others to discover this same creative connection in reverse order. “We have an opportunity here to make connections between music-making and art, both of which are so very essential to St. Louis,” comments ASL Artistic Director, Robin Hirsch, “Partnership with the St. Louis Symphony, in particular, is quite an exciting development for ASL.”
