2018
Despondency is defined as a state of low spirits caused by loss of hope or courage.
In this series of small acrylic paintings on paper, I explored my own period of melancholia during the late part of summer in 2018, with black acrylic paint and bits of reclaimed art paper.
Each piece in this series explores a small sliver of the darkness that can sweep into the mind.
Gender dysphoria is the feeling of distress or discomfort because of the difference between a person’s gender (assigned at birth) and their gender identity. This applies to both males who are assigned a female gender at birth and females who were assigned the male gender at birth. People with gender dysphoria are normally transgender. However, there are cases of non-binary gender identities in which gender dysphoria is present.
Anxiety refers to anticipation of a future concern and is more associated with muscle tension and avoidance behavior. Fear is an emotional response to an immediate threat and is affiliated with a fight or flight reaction. Anxiety disorders cause people to try to avoid situations that trigger or worsen their symptoms. Anxiety Disorders include: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and separation anxiety disorder.
Persistent depressive disorder, also called dysthymia is a chronic form of depression. Loss of interest in normal daily activities, feeling hopeless, lacking productivity, and having low self-esteem and an overall feeling of inadequacy are common symptoms of this disorder. These feelings last for years and may significantly interfere with your relationships, school, work and daily activities.
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it impacts how you feel, think and behave. Depression can also lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Individuals living with depression often have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities and sometimes may feel as if life isn't worth living.
Mixed features is a specifier for the mood disorder bipolar disorder. An individual living with this disorder experiences symptoms of both manic and depressive episodes. This means depressive episodes with mixed features, where the main symptoms are depressive but subclinical manic symptoms are also present. Or a manic episode will present with mixed features, where the main symptoms are those of a manic episode but depressive symptoms are also present.
