LOST IN TRANSLATION
“Lost” implies a feeling of being adrift, disoriented, and uncertain about one’s place in the world. It suggests a state of being mentally and emotionally adrift, unable to fully grasp or communicate one’s thoughts and feelings. “Translation,” on the other hand, evokes the idea of language and communication. It refers to the broad difficulties of expressing oneself and being understood. Language is a powerful tool for connection and understanding, and when it fails or is hindered, it can contribute to a profound sense of isolation.”

COVID-19 was a pandemic. When it arrived no one was ready. Despite the urgent actions we took to protect ourselves, the pandemic brought out an unexpected spectrum of human emotions and responses: fear, panic and paranoia, but also courage, compassion and resilience.
While in isolation, I brought my raw emotions to the canvas and attempted to explore the universal human experience of our existential crises, and I searched for serenity through color and texture. Using salvaged canvases, old paint and whatever scraps I could muster together, I began to process.
No longer connected to the world I once knew, the glitter and gold once decorating the life I thought I had now felt tarnished, fake and forced. Ugly truths about our country, communities and even people I loved and admired became unavoidable.
I no longer felt I knew where I belonged in the world; I no longer knew how to reach people. So I kept painting.
The end result was the Lost in Translation Series.
