"Trouble" Original Hand Painted Acrylic on Canvas 18Hx18Wx1.5D by Erin McGrath Rieke
ABOUT
Trouble is a thick and textured acrylic painting on canvas, created during one of my earliest live art performances for Art Saint Louis, alongside a beautiful classical music concert featuring a few members from the St. Louis Symphony. This piece captures the mix of emotions I felt that night, reflecting not just the energy of the audience but also my own inner turmoil as I stepped into the public eye .
As the music flowed, I grappled with the urge to create something pretty. I wanted to create something that would be well received by the people around me. The swirling colors and bold textures mirror the intensity of the performance, but they also reveal my struggle. I wanted to make something beautiful, yet my feelings were messy and complicated. Each brushstroke reflects that tension, where the desire for a polished piece clashed with the reality of my vulnerability and fear.
With my children by my side, I felt both supported and exposed. Their presence was comforting, but the pressure of sharing my art remained challenging. In the end, Trouble shows that conflict—where the final piece might not look like what I initially imagined, but instead captures the raw honesty of the moment.
This painting serves as a reminder that even in the midst of turmoil, we can create something meaningful. It’s a celebration of embracing the messy parts of life, where beauty can emerge from struggle.
