when you’re my age
about the artwork
This painting was created in the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, in the spring of 2020. It was a strange time for me, my family and friends, the country…for everyone. Great fear swept across the planet, and isolation became the new normal. Grateful for years of existing in an utter state of instability, I tapped into my coping mechanisms—my art—to process the confusion I felt inside.
I began to fine tune a new painting process that incorporated printmaking with my customary flow technique. The resulting works are a juxtaposition of meticulously detailed abstractions.
The name of this painting was taken from the Lori McKenna song of the same name. I listened to the song on repeat for hours each day as I painted. Often, as my husband tirelessly worked in a dark room on the second floor, my two youngest children, pulled out of college, joined me outside on the back deck, on overcast afternoons, and spoke of their dystopian world. I encourage you to explore the lyrics of the song that inspired this piece.
